One month birthday! (Sept. 17)

Today we’re celebrating Lucas’s one month birthday.  It’s exciting to commemorate this special day with him, especially given that some doctors told us early on that Lucas might not make it this far.IMG_2502

Yesterday was a really good day for the three of us, even though Lucas was back on the ventilator.  The little guy was feeling stronger than ever, gripping our fingers with more muscle than his previous strongest day early last week.  He was also awake, with his dark blue eyes wide open, for almost two hours in the afternoon.  And he surpassed his previous high mark on the cuteness barometer, this time by accessorizing – check out the new hat and booties!

Today Lucas is snuggled in with some of our favorite stuffed friends (he’s got the cow, elephant, dog and red blood cell hunkering down with him).  We haven’t been able to hold him these past couple of days because his lungs are a little more fragile after his extubation and re-intubation.  Fortunately we’ve been learning more from the hospital’s physical therapist and from one of our midwives about how to snuggle, soothe and rock him even when he’s in his “nest.”

So happy one month birthday Lucas!   Keep wiggling, and keep building that strength, one day at a time.

He is looking wonderful! strong and alert. I know how difficult it is to not be able to hold your baby, but so glad you are learning other ways to soothe and snuggle him. Please take a moment to give each other a hug and recognize what a strong support you are being for your son. Even though you feel there’s no question about doing anything different because you are his parents, that doesn’t mean it isn’t difficult. There are plenty of people who can not move beyond their own grief to truly bond with and support their ill children. So please, know what amazing parents you are being!

With Love

happy birthday to lucas. I just wish I could be closer to be able to visit. This is an incredible journey for everybody who knows you and thank you for sharing thoughts nearly every day – we all in Portland are anxious to see Lucas pull through and one day in the future, come grow up strong here in the NW.

Much love to the three of you,
Amanda

It’s hard to believe that Lucas is a month old. When we first saw him, he was just 3 days old. It was a hard week for all of us. Today as I look at those lovely blue eyes and watch him move in awe. He has, indeed, chosen the right parents, grand parents, other family members and friends. Reading this blog is a testament not just to beautiful, emotional writing but to the wide network of support our little fighter has.
I agree with so many of my friends who feel that this should be an on going book.
I get to hold you in 2 days to celebrate my 63rd Bday. What a gift!
I love you so much Burke, Krista and Lucas. You are always in my thoughts, dreams and prayers. Hugs, Nonna

Happy 1 Month Birthday, Lucas! Earl loved watching your video this morning. He smiled and waved at you on the computer screen and was very sad when his mean old mom finally turned it off (after the 4th viewing). We are thinking of you guys all the time and are so glad we got to visit with you a couple of weeks ago. Big hugs and high fives to the birthday boy!
