Trip to the River House (Sept. 7)
Over the holiday weekend we ventured out for our first ever “family vacation.” We were fortunate to have been invited to stay at the Randolph’s house in Clark County Virginia, known to all as the River House (it’s near the beautiful Shenandoah River). Below is a photo story of the experience using some fun software that Burke discovered through his job… just click on the first thumbnail image to start the slide show and then click on the right side of the larger image to continue scrolling through.
- Lucas straps into his car seat and gears up for a big trip. The hour and a half drive was smooth and easy.
- The boys lounge on the deck at the River House, which is perched on a hill above the Shenandoah River.
- Lucas liked checking out the birds from the deck, as well as the bugs. This cicada was about half Lucas's size but thankfully left him alone.
- The trees around the house are tall and beautiful and all three of us loved staring up at them swaying in the wind. The weather was also perfect - 80 degrees and sunny each of the 3 days we were there.
- During one chilly morning Lucas and Krista wrapped up in a sleeping bag and played with sticks and grass.
- "Good thing I remembered to pack my thumbs!"
- Lucas chills in the grass with his props. Travelling with Lucas means hours of preparation and packing to bring along the required equipment, chargers, backups, etc.
- Back at the house, Lucas glows in the sun as Daddy tosses him around on the couch.
- On our final day we put Lucas and all his equipment into a wheel barrow and headed out on a path into the woods.
- Wheel barrow travel was a great invention and Lucas was especially excited to bounce over sticks and rocks on the trail.
- Despite all the fun stuff around to play with, Lucas still managed to set aside time to focus on chewing his oral suction catheter.
- A couple hundred yards from the house - at the far point on our "hike" - we used the timer to snap a portait that's in the running for our annual Labor Day card.

“Good thing I remembered to pack my thumbs!” Lucas, your quotes get funnier and funnier every day! Hooray for that awesome and indescribably sun/trees/breeze combination…

Wahoo!!! What an awesome lovely trip. You should really use that wheelbarrow/stroller more often, especially around Mt. Pleasant. I totally love that Lucas enjoys both his thumbs and his oral suction tube so much — good thing both are always at the ready!

Wow! I complained about getting all the cloths and stuff ready for five weeks on the road with three kids. I am in awe of you three and the determination to get out to nature. Kudos for making some great memories, and thanks for sharing.
