Bye bye grandparents (March 3)

Mary Jo and Michael flew home yesterday, and Lucas was definitely sad to see them go.  It was certainly great for Lucas to have all the extra love and attention.  He put on a stellar performance for their last day here, smiling bigger than ever before.  We tried to get the smiles on camera, but apparently he’s saving the big smiles for in-person visits.  Even without the big grins, we got some good shots of the day.

Hi Krista and Burke,

I don’t know if you remember me, but I’m Mel’s sister who came to El Salvador with you guys 5-6 years ago. I am going to med school in August and have always been interested in neonatology so I have been following Lucas’s progress since August when Mel sent me the link to your blog. I wanted to tell you both that you are such amazing parents and he is a very lucky guy to have you to help him through all the obstacles he has and will face. And I can’t believe how well he is doing; I check the site every night to see if there is an update and more pictures and videos to see how much he has grown and improved.
On another note, I have chosen to present an article on myotubular myopathy (specifically on a mouse model that was recently generated to study the mechanism of the disease in hopes for finding a cure) for my senior seminar and although Lucas’s diagnosis has not yet been confirmed, I was wondering if I could show a video of him so I could really get the attention of my peers and they could see what the disease looks like and understand why it is an important topic to study.
Thank you for sharing your story and I look forward to watching Lucas continue to blossom!

Will Burke be home soon? I hope so–I find solo parenting very stressful! Sending lots of positive energy your way (and a few spurts of jealousy toward Burke;)).
